In the 1600s , the Wampanoag Nation had about seventy thousand people living in 67 villages . This map shows some of them . The large print shows the Wampanoag name of a village . The small print gives the modern name . hen the
Pilgrims arrived at what is now Plymouth , Massachusetts , they met native peoples who had lived in the area for thousands of years . Their name , Wampanoag , means “ People of the First Light .” This name was chosen because they lived on the east coast and they received the light of dawn before anyone to the west .
